‘Tis the Season to Get Robbed

Lock on doorIn addition to bringing some of my favorite holidays, November and December also means crime season here in Congo. There’s a marked increase in the number of thefts this time of year. I presume it is because people are looking to provide for their own Christmas celebrations, but I’m really not sure. While we haven’t been victim to any of this crime (nor are we aware that anyone else we know has), we are taking the time to beef up our security.

Today we had a couple of workers doing some work on the concertina wire that tops the walls of our compound. It had been previously installed, but was not streched out widely enough. In fact, it didn’t even go around our whole yard. Today it is looking much better. I’m glad it’s getting fixed!

I couldn’t help but laugh a little as I saw the guys working though. When I was in the military, we had special, thick leather gloves for working with c-wire. These guys don’t have any gloves at all, and they’re wearing shorts and sandals. To top it all off, one of the workers has been crawling through the coil of wire like a tunnel as he works at stringing it along. That’s pretty crazy, if you ask me, but at least it’s getting done!

Isn’t it incredible how different safety issues are outside of north america!? I see the same kind of stuff here in Guatemala! Makes me laugh when I go back home and there are signs and warning for the funniest things that people here would just use common sense!
